We love biking with baby! Getting out on a bike ride with the family always puts me in a better mood. Riding bikes is something we like to do at least once a week and we use our 2-seater bike trailer when we go with the whole family. Carter has an E-bike, so we keep the attachment for the bike trailer on his bike and let him do the hard work pulling both kids ;).
But this summer P has had much greater interest in riding his own balancing bike. He can cruise on that thing and it is so fun to see him enjoy being outside while on his balance bike. Oftentimes when it’s just the kids and me I’ll let P ride his bike while I push L in the stroller.
The other day I had the idea to try baby wearing while riding my bike. After doing some research, I saw no strong recommendation against the safety of baby wearing while biking. With that in mind, here are MY TIPS for a successful and safe experience biking with baby on your back.
Tips for Biking with Baby on your Back
Make sure you are comfortable on your bike and with your baby carrier.
This is not the time to try out your new bike. If your baby is not habituated to being in your baby carrier, give them plenty of time while on your own two feet so you are both comfortable before jumping on the bike.
Choose a supportive, back-carrying carrier.
I LOVE having the option to wear baby on my back. This is a nice option to have a lot of times, but especially when you are on your bike. Biking with baby on your back will ensure that your vision is not at all obstructed by baby. Baby can still see and enjoy the bike ride form your back.
Which Carrier do I use for Biking with Baby?
I love my Ergo Baby Carrier so much. Mine is an older model that was an awesome thrift find, but Ergo still makes a similar (probably improved!) version. I love that the Ergo Baby Carrier can be worn in all different directions. It is my go-to for all our outdoor adventuring, as I can have baby on the front when she needs to breastfeed or snuggle to sleep, or move her to my back if I need my hands and front-body clear. It is also a great option for biking with baby on my back where I know she’ll be comfortable.
Remember helmets for both of you.
I personally would not bring my baby on the bike with me if she was not big enough for a helmet. With no protective bike trailer and harness, it is even more important to keep baby protected. I have only been able to find a bike helmet for sizes 12month +. If you know of bike helmets for smaller babies, I’d love to hear! Because of this, L came on the bike with me for the first time at about 13 months old, as one of P’s bike helmets was starting to fit.
Start Small.
While L was used to bike rides and baby carriers, she was not used to the two combined! We started with a small bike ride to a park only a few blocks away. We were able to stay off the main road. When baby girl decided she was done we were able to get home within a few minutes. If you want to start biking with baby on your back, I would definitely start small and make sure you are both comfortable before you shoot for longer rides.
You’ve got this!
Parenting young littles doesn’t have to keep you stuck at home all day. I’m here to tell and show you that you can still live fully and beautifully through this phase. Are you going to try biking with baby? I’d love to hear how it goes so please share in the comments below!
