10+ Tips for Travel (including flying) During your 3rd Trimester

We just got back from flying to Cape Cod a couple weeks ago and it was so much fun! Some people were surprised that I flew so late in pregnancy (33-34 weeks) and that I was able to hike and ride my bike around the cape. (Read more about our Cape Cod Family Vacation here). I thought I’d write up a little post with tips for others planning a last family vacation before a new baby makes his or her appearance. If you’re planning to camp, you can also check out my tips for camping when pregnant!

Tips for the Flight

Bring lots of (empty) water bottles for your flight.

Don’t forget that you can’t bring filled bottles through security! Bring more than one reusable water bottle so you can keep drinking lots throughout the entire flight.

Try to book an aisle seat and don’t be afraid to get up and pee

Aisle seats are definitely your friend when you are pregnant! Not only does it give you easy access to the bathroom, but walking the aisle at least every two hours helps to prevent blood clots during flight (something you’re more at risk for when pregnant!).

Bring snacks you know you’ll eat

You’ll want to be sure you’ve got enough snacks to last you, especially for a longer flight. Bring non-perishable snacks that are nourishing and you know you’ll be able to stomach! If you’re struggling with food aversions or any sickness at this point in pregnancy, you’ll want to have plenty of options to keep your tummy happy!

Bring plenty of distractions to keep you busy

If you’ve already got a kid (or 2 or 3) you’ll probably have more than enough distractions to keep you busy all flight. (Check out our first experience flying with a toddler) But if you’re going to have a peaceful flight with just you or your man, make sure you’ve got enough to keep you busy! Sitting in those seats can get uncomfortable even when you’re not pregnant, so having books and movies to entertain yourself is always nice. This can be a great time to catch up on reading books on pregnancy, childbirth, or postpartum!

Tips for Your Trip

Carry plenty of water

Just like on the plane, make sure you’ve got water everywhere you go! This is such a must, especially when traveling during hot summer months. Regardless of when or where you travel, bring your reusable water bottle and keep it by your side!

Allow yourself to take breaks

Go easy on yourself and remember that you’re providing energy for two. If your vacation style tends to be pretty active, don’t forget to plan in some down time to allow your body to rest.

Remember to nourish yourself

My mom is notorious for forgetting to eat while on vacation! She gets so excited about all she wants to see and do… I’m sure there are others like this, too! Or maybe you’re just so focused on helping your other kids to eat whatever new foods your trying that you neglect your own needs. Whatever the scenario, just be sure to take care of yourself and baby, too!

Be prepared with healthy(er) snacks

Pregnant and breastfeeding mamas just need to eat more often than other people. Come prepared with healthy snack options in your suitcase, or spend some time your first day or two grabbing some easy snacks from the store. You want to make sure your nutrition is still taken care of, even on busy vacation days.

Start your morning on the right foot

If you’ve got a busy vacation planned, it’s wonderful to take some time in the morning to yourself. For me, this meant doing my prenatal yoga practice at 6 a.m. My stiff pregnant body definitely thanked me on the days I actually made time for this simple practice.

Don’t forget birth prep

If you are getting pretty close to the end of your pregnancy, it might be nice to keep in the routine of whatever birth prep you’ve been doing. (Especially if you’re planning for an unmedicated birth). Setting aside time in the morning or evening for breathing practice, yoga, relaxation meditation or just reading your birth book is a great idea to keep you prepared for your baby’s arrival. (Check out these resources for preparing for a natural childbirth).

You do you!

Everyone will tell you what your vacation “must” include if you are traveling this late in pregnancy. But do whatever feels good and sounds fun to you! Maybe that means relaxing on the beach with both feet up. For me, this meant getting in some last adventures before baby #2 comes… hiking, biking, and yes, some beach time as well!

Relax and enjoy

That’s what you’re here for, right? Take advantage of this time before baby comes and love yourself and whoever it is you’re traveling with!
