DIY Baby Pants from an Upcycled Jacket

Lately I have had baby clothes and capsule wardrobes on my mind as we are prepping to have another little one here in the house! (Check out my post on creating a budget-friendly baby wardrobe) Since before we got pregnant I’ve felt like we would have a girl next, so even though we still won’t find out for a couple more weeks, I’m all eyes for cute little girl clothes! It takes all the restraint I have not to jump on all the deals I find for baby girl clothes!

Being in this state of mind has also had me in my creative mindset, dreaming up my own upcycled baby clothing creations. I’ve been going to the thrift store less for myself and more in the search for items I can transform. Thus we have this darling upcycle project!

I found this extra large hoodie at the thrift store and, while I wasn’t a huge fan of the style, I loved the waffle-style knit and the ribbed sleeves. My first thought was that it would make darling little toddler pants for Peter. So here’s how it went!

Using a pair of his pants that are a similar style to what I had in mind, I traced the pants onto wax paper to create a simple pattern to follow. I then pinned this to the sleeve and cut the sleeve at the appropriate length.

Sew the different pieces together and I had the beginning of a pair of pants! (although they were definitely a little lumpy at this point and wouldn’t stay on because I didn’t have a waist band yet.

After trying these on to see how they fit, I had the inspiration to use the drawstring from the hood as a drawstring waistband. Carefully cutting about a half inch beyond the drawstring, I then pinned it in place on the pants, sewed it up, and… voila! The cutest little pair of DIY toddler pants!

I absolutely love how these pants turned out! The textured knit, the tighter fabric around the ankles, and the tied waist band. Plus, these pants came together in a little over an hour. Not bad considering I am such a novice to sewing!

What upcycling ideas do you have for old clothing items, sheets, or other fabric? I would love to hear about what projects you’re working on!

Here’s one of my favorite most recent projects. These upcycled corduroy coasters turned out so cute and were so easy to make from an old pair of corduroy pants. Seriously, the sky is the limit when it comes to transforming old, worn out, or outdated items. Just look around at what you have and see what you can dream up!
