5 DIY Home Products to Bring Some Cheer into your Home

Well we’re barely into February and I am definitely feeling READY for springtime! Can anyone else relate? Basically, as soon as the new year came I started feeling ready for longer days and warmer weather. I’m dreaming of hikes, camping, and morning walks in the sunshine. I definitely start to miss the sunshine this time of year and I can feel it bringing down my energy and mood. So today I’ve got some easy DIY products that can bring some sunshine-y vibes into your home and help you get through the rest of winter.

Easy Homemade Bar Soap

Have you always wanted to try soap making but been afraid to tackle the complicated process? This recipe lets you dip your feet into soap making without the investment and complicated process. All you need is Melt and Pour Soap base (I used Stephenson’s Melt and Pour Goats Milk Soap Base), essential oils, and your choice of herbs/flowers if you want to add some texture to the soap. Just melt your soap base, stir in the oils and herbs, pour into a mold, and the next day you have ready to use homemade soap!

Where to find soap base? You can buy this at stores like Hobby Lobby, but I believe it is cheapest when you buy it from bulk online soap making stores (like the link above). Do what works best for your needs!

Homemade Foaming Hand Soap

I love making my own hand soap now. It is cost effective, less wasteful, and free of the toxins present in most body care products. This simple recipe needs only four ingredients:

water, castile soap (buy this online or at most grocery stores), almond oil or fractionated coconut oil, and your choice of essential oils

That’s it!

This time around, I decided to liven up the scents in our home with citrus and floral. Here are some cheerful essential oil combinations to bring the sunshine into your home:

Lavender and Lemon

Citrus blends (I combined grapefruit, lemon, bergamot, and orange… any combination is awesome!)

Orange and Juniper Berry

Orange and Eucalyptus

Cheery Essential Oil Scented Soy Candles

Candle making is such a great winter activity to do while it is cold outside. Add some light and gentle springtime scents to your home with these simple DIY Essential Oil Soy Candles. Substitute the 100-120 drops of essential oil in the recipe with any of the combinations listed above, or create your own cheery scent using any essential oils you have on hand.

Yellow Beeswax Candles

These naturally colored beeswax candles just shout out sunshine! You can’t beat the warm, honey-like color of yellow beeswax, plus the soft natural scent is amazing. Watching these candles burn in my home always cheers me up 🙂

Homemade Citrus Dishwasher Detergent

This homemade dishwasher detergent is so easy to make, super cheap, and is actually effective! I have always hated using powder detergents until I made this one. No complaints at all! I always use 20-25 drops of a citrus essential oil blend. Not only does the citrus smell wonderfully fresh, but also helps to clean your dishes.

Where to buy essential oils?

You probably noticed that all of these recipes call for essential oils. If you already have your own supply, no problem! But if you haven’t bought any essential oils, I’m guessing price is one of the things holding you back. I used to think essential oils were so overpriced and would never buy them. But when you consider how little you actually use in a recipe and how much money you actually SAVE by making these products homemade, you realize it is actually so worth it!

My favorite place to get started with essential oils is Simply Earth. Not only do they have high quality oils for a reasonable price and donate part of their proceeds to end human sex trafficking, but they also offer an AWESOME monthly subscription box. Simply Earth will send you FOUR essential oils, recipes, and anything else you need for those recipes for only $40. It’s honestly an amazing deal and the recipes are so fun for helping you learn more about using essential oils.
