Easy Homemade Bath Salts using Essential Oils

This week I tried making something new and it turned out to be the simplest project! A friend recently had a baby, so I decided to try some homemade bath salts to help with her postpartum wellness. I have been wanting to try this for a while, so I’m grateful an opportunity finally got me to do it!

These homemade bath salts were super simple and straight-forward to make with simple ingredients I found at the grocery store. The best thing about making your own bath salts? The sky is the limit here! You can make endless combinations of bath salts once you have a few basic ingredients on hand.

Benefits of Making your Own Bath Salts

Stay in control of your ingredients – keep things clean for you and your family!

Saves money. Seriously. The ingredients I bought (pictured above) were as much as two small jars of fancy bath salts at the store!

Makes less waste. Use and reuse your recycled glass jars! If you’re like me, you’ve got a bunch of glass jars you don’t want to throw out (and why would you when they have so many great uses?!). This recipe is one of those great ways to use (and GIFT) those empty jars.

Makes a beautiful and creative gift for anyone… postpartum mamas, mothers day, husbands. Who couldn’t use a relaxing bath?

What Goes into Homemade Bath Salts?

Salt– There are so many options here. I went with plain Epsom Salt because it is easily accessible for not having planned ahead. If you have a bit more time before making your salts, Himalayan Salt and Dead Sea Salt are really great options with lots of extra benefits. You can also try a combination of salts! If you can’t find these at the store, they are really easy to find online (like through the links above).

Essential Oil– This is an easy way to add your own fragrance in a non-toxic way that also brings extra benefits. Artificial fragrances bring all sorts of potential toxins, so steer clear of those and instead use pure essential oils. Using only a small amount in each recipe, a tiny bottle will last you ages!

Carrier Oil– Not only does this help to moisturize your skin in the bath, it also helps give the essential oils something to bind to so you don’t have undiluted essential oils sticking to your skin! Carrier oils like fractionated (liquid form) coconut oil, almond oil, or jojoba oil work as great carriers and moisturizers for your skin!

Dried Herbs or Flowers– These can add even more benefits, or just make your finished product look pretty! I do recommend grinding your flowers smaller if you don’t have a strainer over your bath drain, as whole flowers can clog drains. Some really wonderful herbs include chamomile, lavender, and dandelion flowers! If you’ve got a specific ailment you want to address with herbal baths, this is a very helpful book to check out!

Simple Essential Oil & Herb Bath Salts

Yield: 16 oz

Equipment

  • Recycled Glass Jar
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Spoon

Materials

  • 2 cups Salt Epsom, Himalayan, and Dead Sea Salts are all great options!
  • 30 drops Essential Oil Use single oils or blends
  • 2 Tbsp Carrier Oil Coconut, almond, jojoba, and argan oil all work great.
  • 1/2 cup Herbs or Flowers (optional) chamomile, lavender, dandelion flowers, rose petals, etc.

Instructions

  • If using herbs or flowers, blend these for a few seconds in a blender or food processor to avoid large pieces going down your bath drain.
  • Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl and stir until well combined.
  • Using a spoon or funnel, transfer bath salts to a recycled glass jar.
  • Label your creation and enjoy a warm, healing bath!
